HR Professional Resolutions
and Goals for 2023

Read: 4 minutes

Summary: VSP HR benefit managers, April Bettencourt and Erin McCue, share how they’re planning their professional resolutions and goals in 2023 to meet the needs of their workforce.

By now you’ve probably had your fill of podcasts, articles, and news stories about how to improve your health, save more money, or learn a new hobby in 2023. You may have even joined a gym, opened a savings account, or bought a painting kit.

Having personal resolutions is important but having professional resolutions and goals can also have a big impact.

And if you’re anything like VSP’s April Bettencourt, Vice President of Global Employee Benefits, and Erin McCue, Senior Manager of Human Resources, you may be searching for just the right balance between meeting the needs of your changing workforce and finding time to slow down and reflect on the bigger picture.

Feeling mired in the day-to-day operations of being an HR/benefits professional?

You’re not alone. April and Erin agreed their top resolution is to dedicate more time to planning for the future versus filling each and every day with regular daily issues.

One of April’s top goals is to learn more about regulatory policies—especially those that have to do with adding employees to the workforce through acquisitions and managing a dispersed workforce.

She’s quick to point out that both of these changes are huge! Employees are no longer located in a few places. They’re now all over the country so understanding compliance is a must.

For Erin, she’s focused on finding a good balance between executing at a high level on the operations side while also developing strategies to stay ahead of the curve. It’s always easier to resolve situations when there’s a plan rather than making urgent decisions.

Do their resolutions sound familiar?

Turning Professional Resolutions into Reality

Setting professional goals is an effective way of working toward self-improvement but you may be wondering the best way to turn them into reality.

There is no one right answer! A quick Google search turns up hundreds of variations on the best way to plan and accomplish with resolutions and goals.

While April uses SMART goals (we’ll share more about that in a sec), Erin is a big proponent of also using her calendar to set aside time for future planning and day-to day operations.

Erin says, “to keep up on the operational stuff, while also doing more strategic planning, I’ll block time on my calendar to really focus on each element. I even plan to add calendar time to meet with consultants or read articles to dedicate time to accomplishing my goals. If you dedicate time, then that feeds into your plan and keeps things top of mind.”

What are SMART goals?

SMART is an acronym that stands for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-based. Each element of the SMART framework sets you up for success because they set a clear path to reaching goals while also setting a clear time frame to achieve them.

Inspiration for Resolutions

April and Erin were excited to share their love of podcasts because who has time to read anymore when you can hop on the treadmill and listen?

Erin admitted she prefers true crime . . . but when it comes to inspiration to reach those goals, she recommends Brené Brown.

Although April also loves a good fiction-filled podcast, her biggest inspiration right now is the book No Ego by Cy Wakeman.

Ready, Set, Go

Making resolutions can be a great way to kick off a new year. They’re a declaration you want to make the year better than the last and sets you on a path to achieving your goals.

Look at your career and set some measurable professional goals that you can track and achieve… but be sure to leave time for some true crime podcasts!
